While competing in a 'one off' round in the 2015 NZ V8 Ute Championship where Richard was able to win both the NZ V8 Ute and the NZ Touring Car Class One overall in the same weekend, the relationship with James "Huggi" Urquhart was fostered.
With immense support from Huggi and the Mitre 10 Trade Racing team Richard was able to clinch the 2016/17 National Title despite being involved in a huge incident at the first round of the championship.
